Digital Eye Strain: 5 Signs Of Digital Eye Strain
Modern life has us constantly in front of screens. Whether its your phone, tablet, TV, or computer, there is always some type of digital screen within reach. This over-exposure to the LED backlighting of digital displays can be damaging over time to our eyes and leads to digital eye strain. Learning the symptoms of digital eye strain can help you take steps to counter the effects and protect the long-term health of your eyes.
Reduce The Amount Of Glare
The mirror-like and self-illuminated properties of the computer screens reflect the external light of the screen to create glares that strain our eyes severely. This can be avoided by reducing the room lighting by installing shades or blinds. Also, use of anti-reflection screen helps in eliminating the glares.

Make Sure To Blink Often
Blinking is very important for our eye health. Whenever we blink, our eyelids spread new tears over our eyes. This cleans the surface of our eyes and facilitates the transmission of oxygen to the cornea, keeping it healthy. But it is difficult to remember to blink so often when we are burdened with work. So, the best way is to put a small note saying âBlink Nowâ at the corner of our monitor as a reminder.

TMJ can affect the temporomandibular joint on either side of the face, meaning it is possible for symptoms to appear on either the left side or right side alone, or both sides together.
In addition to eye socket pain, common symptoms of TMJ include headaches and facial pain, pain in the teeth, neck and/or shoulder, hearing difficulty or loss and occasionally tinnitus .

Monitor Setup For Neck Pain Relief
Your computer monitor is another possible cause of neck pain when you work at the computer for long periods. It should be set at or slightly below eye level to promote a neutral spine position for your neck. All monitors include a stock stand that comes attached to the screen, but many are not adjustable.
How-To Create A Better Monitor Setup
For a monitor that is too short, prop it on a small shelf or box to reach to correct height. A better solution is to use a separate monitor mount that can connect to the back of the screen with a special mount. This usually allows for significantly more flexibility in setting the screen height and distance from your eyes.
The same rules apply to traditional sitting desks or standing desks. If youre considering switching to a standing desk converter, some models have a monitor arm already attached. This ensures that you have monitor properly adjusted whether youre standing or sitting.

The Cause: Sitting At A Computer For Too Long
With the rise of technology came the rise of office and desk related work and, unfortunately, the rise in frequency of desk-related aches and pains. Much of this strain comes from the positioning of things you are reading such as the monitor or documents. Lighting, glare, bending and reaching also come into play as well.

What Causes Eye Muscle Strain
A common cause of eye muscle strain is a condition known as vertical heterophoria or binocular vision dysfunction, which occurs when the vertical alignment of the eyes is off. The misalignment can be due to the structure of the face , or a result of abnormalities with the muscles or nerves in the eyes. It is often a genetic condition, although it can also be caused by a stroke, a neurological disorder or a head injury.
When your eyes are not properly aligned, you may experience double vision, which the brain rejects. To compensate for the misalignment and keep your eyes moving in sync, the extraocular muscles have to work overtime. Eventually, these tiny muscles become strained and fatigued, leading to a range of painful symptoms.

Causes Of Binocular Vision Dysfunction
While BVD is caused by the misalignment of the eyes, meaning that patients with the condition can experience it all the time, there are certain movements and environments that can trigger significant episodes of BVD that result in more severe symptoms. Some of the most common BVD triggers include:
Driving around bends and curves
Driving with vehicles speeding past on either side
Large spaces with tall ceilings, such as theaters, malls, and airports
Moving your head up and down or from side to side quickly
Quickly sitting up or standing from a sitting or lying position
Laying looking up at the sky
Exactly what triggers BVD and how severe symptoms are experienced can vary considerably between patients.
Can Eye Strain Cause Dizziness
As we can see, do not be quick to jump to conclusions that you have a dreaded disease when you experience vertigo eye strain. Eye strain dizziness is a lot better diagnosis than one involving a brain tumor. How does this work? How does eye strain cause dizziness? Well, anything involving the eyes is complicated, and there are several things that could be the root cause. One involves a medical diagnosis, while the other involves technology.

Proper Office Chair For Neck Pain
It is important to invest in a proper office chair, especially if you work mostly in a sitting position. There are thousands of models on the market, but ergonomic chairs offer the most adjustment flexibility and correct postural support.
How-To Setup Your Office Chair
Your office chair should have a full back that extends from the seat of the chair to your shoulders or above. This will give the appropriate low back support to prevent slouching that can lead to a forward head posture. If the lumbar region of the chair doesnt have enough built-in support, a full back allows you to use a small pillow or lumbar roll.
The arms of the chair should be able to adjust to the support the natural position of your elbows when your arms are at your sides. You want to avoid having the elbows too high or too low to prevent postural strain in the neck and upper back muscles. Virtually all office chairs have adjustable seat height, but it is important to make sure that the chair height fits well with your desk height. Other chair options can include adjustments for tilt, seat depth, and seat height to improve the fit of your chair and to prevent postural strain.
How Does Tmj Affect Eye Socket Pain
The pain of dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint can also caused referred pain to affect the eye and eye socket.
This seems to be predominantly caused by interference with the ocular nerves, particularly the tigeminal nerve.
The trigeminal nerve goes to the teeth, jaw muscles, and the temporomandibular joint as well as feeding up to the eye and eye socket.
Inflammation and irritation caused by friction in the temporomandibular joint can irritate and cause dysfunction in the trigeminal nerve which in turn leads on to pain and discomfort in the eye socket.
As the inflammation and pain in the temporomandibular joint worsens, the transferred pain and irritation to the nerve, and consequently the eye will also worsen. Pain in this area could also be due to inflammation, as redness, swelling and soreness can occur in the eye area along with TMJ as an inflammatory response to the friction occurring in the joint.
In the inflammatory response the body sends special inflammation mediators to produce heat and swelling in order to eliminate infection, but this inflammation is also quite painful and sometimes unnecessary.
TMJ can also trigger muscle spasms, tightness and soreness in the ocular muscles, as snags in the joint can cause the muscles to seize up.
How To Address Chronic Eye Strain & Headaches
When long-lasting eye strain leads to chronic headaches, it can be very disruptive to your daily life.
Fortunately, eye strain does not cause permanent damage or injury to the eye, and the condition can often be treated relatively easily. By making simple changes to your working, reading, and driving environments, you can likely address the issues that are straining your eyes and causing headaches.
AAO offers these tips to address chronic eye strain:
- Confirm your glasses or contacts are the correct prescription for your vision needs.
- Use sunglasses when outside in bright light.
- Use artificial tears to address dry eyes..
- Adjust your computer screen so you must gaze slightly downward at it.
- Use a humidifier to improve dry air quality.
- Wear computer glasses to reduce the impact of blue light.
If you continue to experience eye strain and headaches after trying a variety of adjustments, it might be a good idea to see an ophthalmologist. Through an eye exam, your eye doctor can examine your eye muscles, assess for underlying eye or health problems, and confirm you are wearing the proper eyeglass or contact lens prescription. They may be able to identify the cause of your eye strain during this exam.
Can A Herniated Disc In The Neck Or Whiplash Cause Blurred Vision
Many people contact us via email with their medical concerns. Here are some generalized examples of a person diagnosed with a herniated disc and a vision problem.
I have been having problems getting my eyes to focus. I went to the eye doctor, I got an exam and I am told my eyes are okay.
I have had neck problems for a long time. I have degenerative arthritis and it is not getting better. I have been having problems getting my eyes to focus. I went to the eye doctor, I got an exam and I am told my eyes are okay. The eye doctor suggested I should go to a cardiologist and make sure I do not have a blockage in my neck arteries. I have noticed that as my neck pain is progressing I get more frequent headaches and pain radiates into my jaw. When I told my eye doctor about the jaw pain that is when he suggested the cardiologist.
After I went to the cardiologist
After the cardiologist, I seem to be okay heart and circulation wise. I have been treated by a chiropractor for a herniated disc at C5-C6. He is also treating me for cervical lordosis. He has been telling me that my vision problems are related to my neck issues and that I should consider some type of injections or eventually a fusion surgery. I need to consider something because the blurry vision, especially in my one eye, is worse.
