    How To Deal With Sciatica

    As many as 40 percent of people suffer from sciatica during their lifetime, and it occurs more frequently later in life. It is usually confused with back pain, but it is a different type of pain. The pain originates from the sciatic nerves and often goes away on its own within a few hours or days.

    However, some attacks can last for weeks or even months. Fortunately, you can do a lot to prevent sciatica as well as to relieve the pain.

    Exercises for sciatica are key in preventing and helping to alleviate sciatica symptoms. When choosing exercises, make sure they are aimed at strengthening the core of the body. The core of the body is not only made up of the abdominal muscles, although they are crucial for the stability of the spine. The muscles of the back, hips, pelvis, and buttocks are also part of the nucleus. Strengthening all of these muscles helps support the spine. Many types of training, including yoga and pilates, can strengthen the core muscles. For example, the plank and bridge are movements that target the core. But if you are in the acute phase it is best to choose exercises specifically designed for people with sciatica.

    Surgical Options For Sciatica Pain Relief

    For some patients, exercise and other non-surgical options will be ineffective at relieving chronic sciatica pain.

    Also, in a minority of cases, symptoms can worsen to include neurologic problems like severely weakened legs or issues with the lower GI tract. In these scenarios, surgery may be the only means of resolving the problem.If your orthopedist determines that youre a good candidate for surgery, your options include:

    • Laminectomy/Laminotomy. If your spinal nerves are being compressed or pinched by contact with the lamina , removal of this piece of bone can relieve the pressure and resolve the sciatica. This procedure is most commonly used in cases where the sciatica is being caused by spinal stenosis, in which the spinal column has been narrowed by injury, repeated overuse, and/or genetic predisposition.
    • Between each vertebral bone is protective tissue known as a disc. Each disc has a hole for the spinal cord to pass through it. A slipped,” pinched, or herniated disc has become misaligned with the spine, causing this hole to press directly on the sciatic nerve. A discectomy removes part or all of the damaged disc to relieve the pressure. The disc may also be replaced with an artificial disc.

    After surgery, avoid lifting or twisting motions or abrupt movements for at least two to four weeks. No participation in sports, either.

    Can sciatica cause hip pain? Sciatica and hip pain go hand in hand, as the sciatic nerve connects various nerves from within the spinal column that runs along the hip, buttock, leg, and into the foot.

    Sciatica causes hip pain when the sciatic nerve is compressed. It can occur with inflammation, degenerative disc disease, a bulging or ruptured disc, or with a spinal stenosis condition.

    Regular repetitive movements we do while running, jogging, squatting, and cycling can cause the pelvic muscles to become worn and damaged, which can result in inflammation and pain of the hip joint. Compression of the sciatic nerve can occur with internal health conditions, as well as with trauma or injury to one of the discs in the spinal column.

    There are many treatments for sciatica, but they fall into two categories: non-operative treatment and surgical treatment.

    Non-operative treatments for sciatica include Physical Therapy , medications like non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs or opioids, injections, and rest. These treatments are often successful, but you may need to continue with them over some time before your symptoms fully resolve.

    As experienced Physical Therapists with a long history of helping patients resolve sciatica and foot and ankle pain without dangerous surgery, we consider surgical treatments an absolute last resort. With sciatica, there are two main options for surgical intervention:

    • Microdiscectomy: This surgery specifically relates to disc herniation. During the surgery, the damaged disc is either partially or entirely removed to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve. Your surgeon may also need to remove a small piece of bone.
    • Laminectomy: During this surgery, your surgeon removes the lamina the arched part of your spinal bones to make space for your sciatic nerves, or other associated nerves, to pass through without compression or restriction.

    We only recommend surgery in very rare cases when patients do not respond to non-operative treatment. These patients continue to have significant leg numbness, pain, weakness, and sensory dysfunction even after physical therapy, rest, and medication.

    You Choose Hard Surfaces

    If you run, hard surfaces, such as concrete or asphalt, force you to absorb a lot of impact. This compresses the vertebrae in your spine, which might cause irritation of the sciatic nerve.

    Choose trails or the treadmill for your running workouts instead. Also, concentrate on running with a shorter stride, so you reduce your bounce and incur less impact. Try weaving in some cross training during the week. Swim and do some upper body strength training to give your legs, butt, and back a break.

    Proper form means you are doing the same thing in the correct way each time. Pay attention to your body when exercising and follow the steps correctly, using proper posture to avoid aggravating your injury.     You betcha! Yoga is perfect for sciatica pain relief. I know because Ive used yoga poses to relieve hip pain for myself and my private clients. Here are three of my very favorite hip pain-relieving poses.

    Getting Set Up

  • Use ujjayi breathing by inhaling and exhaling through your nose only.
  • Begin on your back with your pelvis in neutral, knees bent, heels in line with your SITs bones.
  • Take a moment to exhale and hug your abdominal muscles around your abdomen and low back. This will help support your hips and low back so youll get the optimal stretch.
  • Lift your right leg and cross your right ankle just beneath your left knee on your thigh. Make sure the right ankle is off the left thigh. This way, the ankle bone doesnt press into your thigh muscles .
  • You have just made a Figure 4 of sorts. When I was a personal trainer, thats what we called this stretch, so you may know it by this name, too.
  • If you feel a stretch, hang out here and breathe.
  • Hold here for 5-10 breaths.
  • When you are finished, keep muscular energy as you lower your leg and reverse sequence to do the other side. Be aware that the flexibility of your right side and your left side may differ dramatically.

    Put the affected legs foot across the opposite leg and bring your knee up to your chest, holding that leg at the back of the knee for support. Place the ball under the glute at the point of the tightness.

    Next, lean over the ball until you can feel the tightness in the glute. As with the other moves, wait until the tightness eases and continue, slowly extending the knee out as straight as you comfortably can.

    One of the most wonderful parts of yoga is that you get to practice self-care.

    Your ego can say whatever it wants. Then, its your job to sweep the thought away so you can get back to the work you really need to be doingtaking care of yourself!

    Eventually, as you keep brushing your ego aside, it will speak up less and less. Before long, you will be able to have an ego-free practice. Once your ego quits getting involved in your yoga, you should be able to practice a pain-relieving sequence.
