Why Youre Feeling Bloated

So, what is bloat, exactly?

A little nutrition 101 for you: Bloat is a buildup of gas in the abdomen, usually caused by digestion or swallowed air. Feeling bloated can result from an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. This bacteria ferments food, creating gas that causes bloating. In other words, you feel like youve been blown up like a balloon.

Water retention is similar to . You know the feeling: You cant get your rings on, and your eyes look like youve been in a brawl. This lovely feeling is usually caused by consuming foods high in salt . High levels of sodium cause your body to hold onto extra fluid.

Causes Of Stomach Pain After Eating Banana

Stomach ache after eating banana is uncommon, but in few people this can be quiet discomforting. It can produce stomach pain and gasses. Here are some of the common reasons for it.

Unripe banana: The amount of starch present in banana depends on its ripeness. Unripe banana is known to contain at least 12 times more starch than the ripe banana fruit. Too much of starch in food is difficult to digest. It can produce more amount of gas in the intestine and stomach. Excess of gas is known to cause pain and stomach distress. If you eat ripe banana, you may be avoid the risk of this untoward problem.

Gastrointestinal disease: People suffering from irritable bowel disease often suffer from pain in abdomen and diarrhea alternating with constipation. Eating certain foods can increase the symptoms of IBS. Bananas often produce discomfort in people suffering from IBS, because during the process of digestion, small amount of gas is formed which for a normal person does not cause any problem, but for person suffering from IBS, this gas can lead to pain and bloating.

Allergy: Some people may be allergic to banana. Person allergic to ragweed pollen may become allergic to banana also. Both ragweed and banana have similar types of protein. The immune system of the body may react to this protein leading to various symptoms such as sore throat, stomach ache and several other symptoms.

Banana Allergy In Infants

Symptoms of a banana allergy are similar in infants as they are for anyone else.

A person should always be cautious when introducing new foods to an infant, particularly to common allergens such as peanuts. If a child has eczema or another allergy, the risk of a severe allergic reaction to a food or other substance is greater.

It is still recommended to introduce common food allergens, however, including peanuts, tree nuts, soy, and eggs, to an infant when they are between 5 ½ and 7 ½ months old. Delaying the introduction of these foods increases the risk of food allergies.

Parents and guardians should monitor infants and young children for signs of an allergic syndrome called food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome .

Children with FPIES develop severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea 2â3 hours after eating an allergen. Blood allergy tests are unlikely to diagnose the condition.

Many babies and children with FPIES initially show signs of allergies to breast milk or formula. FPIES then usually causes allergies to many foods when these start to be eaten, though dairy and soy are among the most common triggers.

Children with this disorder often need to eat a limited diet, and untreated FPIES can cause severe malnourishment and dehydration.

Dont Stop Eating Fruits

Why Do Bananas Cause a Stomach Ache?

My advice would be to not stop eating healthy fruits like apples, grapes, cherries and bananas, even though they may cause you some gas on occasions.

Usually, its only when eaten in excess that fruits cause gastrointestinal issues like stomach ache, belly bloat and diarrhea.

Rather, try a week off from all of the gassy fruits listed here, like pineapple, pears, mangoes, bananas, strawberries, and especially problematic canned fruit and dried fruits like apricots.

Then, once youve taken this break, slowly reintroduce them one at a time and see how they affect you.

Eat only that particular fruit on its own at first, in a decent amount and away from other foods, and you should be able to identify which fruits give you an upset stomach and cause the worst bloating and flatulence for you personally.

Once youve identified a particular fruit that causes you gas you can still choose to eat it by taking a comprehensive digestive enzyme, like this potent and fast acting one I use.

These supplements break down sugar alcohols like sorbitol, indigestible fiber, flatulence causing fructose, and other problematic substances in fruits, well before they can cause intestinal problems later on.

I hope this list of both gas causing fruit and non gassy alternative fruits has been helpful and would appreciate if you could share it to help others out there.

Saccharin Aka Sweet ‘n Low

There are a number of reasons you should be weary of saccharin-sweetened foods. Inflammation And Your Microbiome

The majority of inflammatory conditions begin in your gastrointestinal tract. This is because inflammation involves your gut, microbiome, and immune system. This triad is called the Inflammation circuit, one of six circuits that form the NeuroEndoMetabolic Stress Response. The other five circuits are: Hormone, Bioenergetic, Neuroaffect, Cardionomic, and Detoxification.

The NEM Stress Response is your bodys global response to stress and is equipped to handle short-term stresswhether it is physical or psychological. However, chronic stress can overwork your NEM Stress Response leading to dysregulation of its various interconnected circuits. This is most clearly observed in the adrenal glands, which are part of the Hormone circuit and the first responders to stress.

Your adrenal glands secrete your bodys main anti-stress hormone, cortisol. This important hormone helps regulate blood sugar levels and blood pressure, maintains your heart and blood vessels, suppresses the immune system, and neutralizes inflammation. When your adrenals are dealing with chronic stress, cortisol output first goes up, bringing on mild symptoms. But once they become exhausted, your cortisol output drops and severe symptoms begin to manifest.

So, how is all of this linked to the gut microbiome? And how can the benefits of bananas, especially when theyre still green, improve your gut health?

Probiotics Are Important For Managing Bloat

Stomach Pain from Green Bananas?

Dr. Josh Axe, DNM, CNS, DC, and founder of Ancient Nutrition told INSIDER,Good bacteria called probiotics act like friendly gut bugs in your digestive tract, killing off bad bacteria that can trigger digestive issues and reactions.

When choosing probiotics, Jessica Cording, MS, RD, CDN, advised,Yogurt and kefir are both good sources of probiotic bacteria, which help promote good digestion, which is key for managing bloat. If youre sensitive to lactose, kefir may be more easily tolerated than yogurt, as it is almost completely lactose-free. Whichever you choose, be sure to avoid sweetened varieties, as sugar and artificial sweeteners can be rough on digestion and lead to bloating.

Can Cause Tooth Decay

High levels of starch can cause severe tooth decay if you do not pay attention to dental hygiene. According to some studies, chocolate can be even more harmful to oral health compared to licorice and gum.

The starches dissolve slowly in the mouth, while sugars dissolve quickly. So when you consume food like bananas, their particles stay between the teeth for about two hours, thereby accumulating more bacteria, causing decay.

Can Eating More Than Six Bananas At Once Kill You

It’s sometimes said that eating a lot of bananas at once could be dangerous – it has even been suggested that eating more than six in one sitting could kill you. Can this really be true?

Bananas are one of the world’s most popular fruits, stuffed with vitamins and minerals. On the face of it they are good for you, so why do some people think they could be fatal?

One well-known figure who has spread this idea around is Karl Pilkington, the grumpy friend of comedian Ricky Gervais.

“Before when you were talking about bananas… I had that fact, about if you eat more than six, it can kill you,” he said in one of his conversations with Gervais and fellow comedian Stephen Merchant.

“It is a fact. Potassium levels are dangerously high if you have six bananas… I saw a bowl of bananas. There’s six bananas there. You know why there’s only six? Seven would be dangerous.”

So how dangerous is potassium? Actually, it is crucial for survival and can be found “within every single cell of the body,” says Catherine Collins, a dietitian at St George’s Hospital in London.

“We use it to help generate an electrical charge which helps the cell function properly. It helps keep your heart rate steady, it helps trigger insulin release from the pancreas to help control blood sugars, and more importantly keeps blood pressure in check.”

There are some people who should steer clear of foods that are high in potassium though, warns Collins – those with kidney disease.

Why Do I Have Stomach Pains After Eating Bananas?

“Why do bananas hurt my stomach” might be answered by allergies or intolerance, but the fact is that there is no remedy for the problem. Those who have severe banana allergies must avoid bananas altogether or risk life-threatening problems. Adrenaline injections can help the serious anaphylactic shock that might occur. Asthmatic reactions can be treated with antihistamines. Either way, serious reactions call for a visit to the emergency room.

Those who are banana intolerant must avoid bananas simply to avoid pain. For some people, heating up the banana seems to make the problem less severe, so some might be able to eat bananas in banana bread, for example. However, before trying this, consult with a medical professional about the best way to handle the intolerance.

    What Is A Banana Intolerance

Unlike a banana allergy, sufferers of banana intolerance need to eat the fruit before symptoms can occur. Like many food intolerances, these symptoms do not always have an immediate onset, and can occur up to a few days after eating the fruit. This means it can sometimes be difficult for sufferers to identify banana intolerance, as the symptoms may be mistakenly attributed to other factors.

Food intolerances can occur when the body incorrectly identifies the proteins in a food, in this case bananas, as foreign. This can happen when small particles of food escape through the gut wall into the bloodstream. The body sees these particles as a potential threat and sends out antibodies to fight them. These IgG antibodies trigger an inflammatory response which can cause the unwanted conditions that affect areas of the body such as the skin or digestive system.
