Is Acupuncture Safe During Active Cancer Treatment

Acupuncture Can Help With Diabetic Nerve Pain

It can be helpful to arrange acupuncture during and immediately after a course treatment to reduce the severity of side-effects. And particularly for Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy, acupuncture can still be effective long after cancer treatment has ceased and until symptoms have resolved.

It is always wise to check the qualifications and experience of your acupuncturist, and choose someone who has experience in cancer care as well as a sound knowledge of chemotherapy agents and a compassionate and gentle approach. Furthermore, someone with traditional education but who is abreast of the most recent research is ideal, as it is important to adhere to strategies supported by scientific research.

How Can It Help People With Shingles

In an acupuncture treatment for shingles, the acupuncturist employs different techniques, including fire needling. This method involves the use of specialised needles that are heat resistant. Following the principles of TCM, the acupuncturist works on different acupoints on the body which correspond to the affected meridians, which may include those in the large bowel, thyroid, spleen and kidneys, just to name a few.

Clinical studies show that combining acupuncture with conventional medications for shingles produces greater pain reduction, allowing the person suffering from shingles to function normally again.

There may be no specific drug that can completely stop herpes zoster infection, but maintaining a balanced flow of energy within your bodys meridians or energy pathways might just turn out to be your personal cure for shingles. Description Of The Condition

The 2011 International Association for the Study of Pain defined neuropathic pain as “pain caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory system” , based on a previously agreed definition . Neuropathic pain may be caused by nerve damage, and is often followed by changes to the central nervous system . Pain can be severe and may be present for months or years. The origin of pain is complex , occurring in approximately between 6.9% and 10% of the population worldwide . Many people with neuropathic pain conditions are significantly disabled and experience moderate or severe pain for many years.

Neuropathic pain is usually classified according to the cause of nerve injury. The common causes of neuropathic pain include painful diabetic neuropathy , postherpetic neuralgia , amputation , neuropathic pain after surgery or trauma, trigeminal neuralgia, stroke or spinal cord injury, and HIV infection. Neuropathic pain is also divided into peripheral neuropathic pain, central neuropathic pain , or mixed neuropathic pain. Subsequently, there is an ongoing debate regarding the efficacy of different drugs for central versus peripheral neuropathic pain .

Chronic pain conditions comprised five of the 11 topranking global conditions for years lived with disability in 2010 , and are responsible for a considerable reduction in quality of life, loss of employment, and increased healthcare costs .

Why It Is Important To Do This Review

Acupuncture has been increasingly used to treat chronic pain and is considered to be one of the most popular types of complementary alternative medicine available in Western healthcare , with a survey showing that 13% of adults in Europe and Israel have used acupuncture to treat chronic pain . However, uncertainty remains regarding the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture treatments despite a number of clinical trials being undertaken.

This review will use the methodological standards outlined in the PaPaS Author and Referee Guidance for Pain Studies , which includes a definition of a reduction in pain intensity of 50% or more to identify improvements in comorbid symptoms, quality of life, and function. This approach will assess the best available evidence to determine whether acupuncture provides beneficial treatment for neuropathic pain in adults.

Rebooting The Nervous System

Neuropathy: Can acupuncture help with nerve pain ...

Itslike restarting a computer, Dr. Rosenquist says. When its running slowly oracting weird, you restart it. We are trying to turn that nerve off. When itcomes back on, hopefully it will send an appropriate transmission as opposed toa pain transmission.

Treatmentoptions for PHN patients include:

  • Intercostal nerve blocks: A local anesthetic can be injected between two ribs.
  • Thoracic epidural injections: Anti-inflammatory medicine can be injected into the space around the spinal cord to decrease nerve root inflammation and reduce pain.
  • Tricyclic antidepressants: Medications such as amitriptyline may be used to relieve pain.
  • Membrane stabilizers: Medications such as gabapentin can be used to reduce the pain associated with PHN.
  • Capsaicin cream: This topical cream can be applied to the affected area to relieve pain temporarily.
  • Patientswith refractory PHN rarely need opioid pain medication. However, you should be evaluated by a physician. We cant make a blanket statement abouttreatment. It is individualized, she says.

A Word About The Shingles Vaccine

If you are age 60 or over and have not had shingles, talk to your doctor about getting the shingles vaccine. Not only will it reduce your risk of developing shingles, but if you do develop shingles, youll be more likely to have a mild case. And, just as important, youll be much less likely to develop PHN if youve had the vaccine.

Ask The Acupuncturist: Does Acupuncture Treat Nerve Damage

ask the acupuncturist patient stories condition information FAQs

Weve had many patients ask about neuropathy and nerve damage and how acupuncture can help with these conditions.

The problem with nerve cells is that they take longer to regenerate than blood or skin cells. With nerves, larger nerves have a harder time regenerating. But the smaller nerves can often be improved with acupuncture.

In this video of Ask the Acupuncturist, Jessica Gaddis shares a story about her father and how more frequent acupuncture treatments helped him regain feeling in his foot.

Acupuncture can be so effective for nerve conditions and without the side effects of medication. In fact, we treat a lot of nerve conditions, such as Bells Palsy, sciatica and neuropathy at Encircle Acupuncture.

    Acupuncture To Relieve Neuropathy Pain

A growing number of people are using acupuncture to treat neuropathy pain linked with diabetes and other health-related problems.

What is acupuncture? It is a practice in which fine needles are inserted into the skin to stimulate specific points in the body. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the theory that energy flows through the body along certain pathways, called ââ¬Ëchiââ¬â¢. Illness or pain results when that energy is blocked or out of balance. The Chinese theory holds that acupuncture unblocks or balances that flow of energy.

Many Western researchers say acupuncture may alter brain chemicals that affect the body and mind. Translated into the language of Western medicine, the healing power of acupuncture may come from its effect on the nervous system, on hormones, and on “feel good” brain chemicals called endorphins.

One landmark study found that patients have reduced pain and improved movement with acupuncture. The National Institutes of Health and World Health Organization have both approved certain uses of acupuncture related to pain.

How To Find The Right Licensed Acupuncturist

    Acupuncture for sciatica pain

Acupuncture for neuropathy is generally considered safe, but you shouldnt leave things to chance and risk by booking an appointment at the clinic that doesnt seem credible. Make sure your acupuncturist has completed the necessary training and meets all the requirements determined by the state. You can always ask your doctor for a referral or check the websites that provide such information . Once youve found a certified practitioner, make sure he/she offers the treatments for your condition and schedule an appointment.

    Acupuncture Can Bring Immense Relieve

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is used to relieve pain and treat discomfort. When the needles are inserted into the various pressure points in the body, the nervous system is stimulated, which releases endorphins and in turn, changes the bodys response to pain. Apart from performing acupuncture, a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner can also prescribe a range of herbs that can help speed recovery and aid in addressing pain and discomfort.

Your Body Will Become More Resistant To Pain

Acupuncture will help the body produce endorphins, which are your bodys natural painkillers such a technique will change your bodys response to pain, which means that some of the most common symptoms of neuropathy will be significantly reduced. When To Consider Acupuncture

Because acupuncture rarely causes more than mild side effects, it is a potential alternative to pain medications or steroid treatments. It is also considered a complementary medicine that can be used along with other treatments. It is best to discuss the use of acupuncture with your health care provider.

    Assessment Of Reporting Biases

    How Acupuncture Helps Nerve Pain?

Funnel plots will be used to assess reporting biases if 10 or more studies are included in a meta-analysis. Such a funnel plot asymmetry could be caused by publication or related biases, or by systematic differences between small and large studies. If a relationship is identified, the clinical diversity of the studies will be further examined as a possible explanation and described in the text. However, since graphical evaluation can be subjective, Eggerâs method will also be used to access the reporting biases.

    Data Collection And Analysis

We used the standard methodological procedures expected by Cochrane. The primary outcomes were pain intensity and pain relief. The secondary outcomes were any painrelated outcome indicating some improvement, withdrawals, participants experiencing any adverse event, serious adverse events and quality of life. For dichotomous outcomes, we calculated risk ratio with 95% confidence intervals , and for continuous outcomes we calculated the mean difference with 95% CI. We also calculated number needed to treat for an additional beneficial outcome where possible. We combined all data using a randomeffects model and assessed the quality of evidence using GRADE to generate ‘Summary of findings’ tables.

What You Need To Know About Peripheral Neuropathy

The number of peripheral neuropathy sufferers just cited only reflects the tip of the iceberg. Indeed, in years to come peripheral neuropathy, which is right now increasing in prevalence at a mind-blowing rate, has the potential to become one of the most widespread scourges humanity has yet known.

Why be alarmed? Because peripheral neuropathy strikes individuals without pity. It strikes for a vast variety of reasons, both exotic and distressingly common-place . And if you develop neuropathy and only put your trust in contemporary medicine, youll be rather unapologetically told that neuropathy is virtually without cure or treatment.

As a result, neuropathy sufferers are usually desperate. Nothing has worked for them. The painkilling medicines generally suggested as the only real course of action by most doctors cause awful side effects. They are prescribed with the caveat that there is nothing else we can do. Indeed, in all my years of experience I have yet to meet a neuropathy patient who was completely satisfied with their progress or how the doctor was handling their case.

Fortunately, as a friend and neuropathy treatment coach, my message to these neuropathy sufferers is simply this: Be of good cheer! There is a solution.

Indeed, my program is designed to help the neuropathy sufferer finally gain the upper hand in the fight against this devastating epidemic.

If You Have A Fear Of Needles Dont Despair

Acupuncture & Health : Acupuncture for a Pinched Nerve

Even if you are afraid of needles like approximately 50 million other Americans, you can still turn to TCM for relief from neuropathy. Acupressure offers similar benefits to acupuncture but without being nearly as invasive. Acupressure involves massaging or applying pressure to the various acupuncture points in the body in order to stimulate the various energy pathways. Acupressure may help to relieve many of the symptoms associated with neuropathy, including a tingling or burning sensation, a prickly feeling, and the loss of sensation that is typically associated with nerve damage.

Acupuncture can prove to be very useful in treating neuropathy. When used alongside a selection of prescribed Chinese herbs, it can even be more efficient than many traditional courses of treatment.

How Does Acupuncture Treat Sciatica Or Sciatic Nerve Inflammation

Acupuncture can help reduce the pain of sciatica. There is substantial research to show that acupuncture is significantly better than no treatment and also at least as good, if not better than, standard medical care for back pain .

The British Acupuncture Council says Acupuncture can help relieve back pain and sciatica by:

    • Stimulating nerves located in muscles and other tissues, which leads to release of endorphins and other neurohumoral factors, and changes the processing of pain in the brain and spinal cord .
    • Reducing inflammation, by promoting release of vascular and immunomodulatory factors .
    • Improving muscle stiffness and joint mobility by increasing local microcirculation , which aids dispersal of swelling.
    • Causing a transient change in sciatic nerve blood flow, including circulation to the cauda equine and nerve root. This response is eliminated or attenuated by administration of atropine, indicating that it occurs mainly via cholinergic nerves .
    • Influencing the neurotrophic factor signalling system, which is important in neuropathic pain .
    • Increasing levels of serotonin and noradrenaline, which can help reduce pain and speed nerve repair .
    • Improving the conductive parameters of the sciatic nerve .
    • Promoting regeneration of the sciatic nerve

    Acupuncture On The Nhs

Acupuncture is sometimes available on the NHS, most often from GP surgeries or physiotherapists, although access is limited.

Most acupuncture patients pay for private treatment. The cost of acupuncture varies widely between practitioners.

If you’re being treated by an acupuncture practitioner for a health condition or are considering having acupuncture, it’s advisable to discuss this with your GP.

Will Acupuncture Help Sciatica And Sciatic Nerve Pain

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, which consists of a large bundle of smaller nerves that begin in the lumbar spine, travel down the buttocks, and move through the leg.

Technically, sciatica is not a disease, but a group of symptoms that affect the region of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is not a conventional medical diagnosis. It has several possible causes and these may lead to different treatments, so we use the term sciatica to describe a set of symptoms.

Radiating pain is one of the more common and intense symptoms associated with sciatica. There can also be numbness and tingling starting in the lower back radiating down the leg. These may include back pain but there may be only hip, leg pain or even foot pain. Sometimes there is minimal pain and the patient mostly suffers from numbness or tingling, we call paresthesia. There may be leg weakness or coldness. The presentation is variable and usually happens only on one side. The pain may be described as aching, stabbing or burning.

Some of the more common causes of sciatica include the idea of the nerve getting pinched. Pressure can cause the nerve to become inflamed which causes the nerve to malfunction. The pressure may come near the spine where the nerves that feed the legs come from. It may occur in the hip joint or near the muscle known as piriformis. In most cases, inflammation encourages increased pressure by causing the tissues to swell.

    How Does Acupuncture Work

At PMIR, your painful nerve symptoms can be managed, and ...

The classic Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the bodys natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.

The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the bodys own internal regulating system
