Is My Back Weak
Weak back and especially core and abdomen muscles will be unable to support the back sufficiently leading to pain and tiredness.
Symptoms of a weak back include pain, tiredness,;and stiffness in the lower back, which gets worse during the day, especially if you are standing for a long period of time as well as pain in the lower back after lifting.
A weak back can give pain in the lumbar region of the back. It is caused by the muscles in the back and abdomen not being strong enough to do their job of supporting the spine properly. Poor posture is also a contributory factor putting more strain on back muscles than is necessary. Back strengthening exercises, core strengthening, pilates,;and improving posture are all options for improving back strength.
Back And Shoulder Pain
Back and shoulder pain is a common combination of symptoms experienced by many patients, either concurrently or in alternating patterns. Upper back pain can affect the shoulder joint and certain shoulder problems can also cause pain in the upper back and chest. This is a combination of symptoms which has plagued me recurrently, but only occasionally, for many years. I always thought most of these flare-ups were related to the constant martial arts injuries I sustained during my teaching career. However, now that my neck issues have gotten much worse, I get this particular pattern of suffering more often, with radiating soreness from the neck to the shoulder and acute blinding pain near the shoulder scapula.
It is important to diagnose the correct cause of the pain, if subsequent treatments are going to have any hope of success. Therefore, the goal of this article is to help patients to better understand the true nature of this common combination upper body pain syndrome.
Muscular Sprains And Tendon Or Ligament Strains
Strains and sprains most typically occur when we engage in tasks that our body is not accustomed to, or when we are involved in an accident. Lifting while twisting, or stretching past ones limits are common causes to strains and sprains of the back. These can be extremely painful, and are often accompanied by swelling and bruising of the surrounding area. Strains and sprains in the back tend to involve changes to the alignment of the spine and therefore typically respond well to chiropractic care.

Weight Loss Exercise And Diet
Think about the extra pounds people carry every day due to their being overweight. This puts added pressure and strain on the back and stomach muscles, causing those muscles to stretch and weaken. Weak back and stomach muscles cannot support the back properly. Poor posture can shift your body out of balance. This forces only a few muscles and joints to do all the work. Without proper exercise, muscles become weak and tire easily. Exercise is necessary to keep the back strong and limber. A good conditioning exercise program led by a trained instructor can be particularly helpful. An effective program includes a warm-up period; about 30 minutes of aerobic activity ; isolated muscle group work ; and a cool-down period. Over a period of time, the rewards of regular aerobic workouts can include a slimmer waistline and healthier back.
Am I Likely To Get Back Pain
Several factors can increase your chances of having upper and middle back pain. Among them:
- Age.Back pain starts for most people in their 30s or 40s, and itâs more common the older you get.
- Being out of shape. The stronger the muscles in your back, shoulder, and abdomen, the lower your chance of injury.
- Weight. If you carry extra pounds, you put more strain on your back.
- Underlying conditions. Diseases such as arthritis and cancer can cause back pain.
- Smoking. Smokerâs cough can strain your back. And if you smoke, you may be slower to heal, which can make your back pain last longer.

When The Neck Is The Likely Culprit
Inflammation of any of the 14 nerves or eight pairs of joints in the neck can cause neck pain. The joints or vertebrae serve as a hinge that lets us nod or shake our heads during conversation . In fact, up to 70% of 65-year-olds may have symptomatic arthritis in one or more neck joints.
Because pain in one area can so often be confused with another, a thorough exam must be done, including range of motion, strength testing and provocative neck and shoulder maneuvers, says Dr. Ricchetti. You may have arthritis or nerve-related neck pain if pain:
- Radiates to your shoulder blade, or close to or on the side of your neck.
- Electric-like, stabbing, burning or tingling.
- Radiates down past your elbow or even into your hand.
- Persists at rest.
- Radiates down your arm when you extend or twist your neck.
- Is relieved when you support your neck.
Its important to see a specialist to get a thorough physical examination of your neck and shoulder. To help with diagnosis, they may inject lidocaine into the shoulder, or the joints or nerves of the neck. This diagnostic test helps guide treatment if it relieves pain, it demonstrates where the problems are, explains Dr. Ricchetti. Whether the problem lies in your neck or your shoulder, conservative measures are usually tried first.

Cortisol and adrenaline are released, and there is typically an involuntary tightening of your muscles. This often occurs in the neck, shoulders, and down the spine. Prolonged tension in these areas can lead to back pain and, more specifically, lower back pain. You may have had a massage therapist tell you that you hold a lot of tension in your shoulders, and this phenomenon is what they are referencing.;

Partial Rotator Cuff Tears
As the rotator cuff continues to age or degenerates, a portion of the rotator cuff might separate from the bone that it is normally attached to.; This is usually part of the natural progression of tendinosis.;
If enough of the rotator cuff starts to separate then we have a small cleft or defect in the rotator cuff attachment. We call that a partial tear. Partial tears are not large enough to cause weakness of the shoulder.; However, if you have a painful partial tear, you can have pain on top or on the side of the shoulder. In addition, you may find it very painful when trying to lift the arm overhead.
Some partial tears hurt, while others do not. Determining if your partial tear is painful is usually possible with a physical exam.;;Most people with partial tears of the rotator cuff are going to respond to physical therapy.; If physical therapy and other non-surgical treatments do not improve your pain, then surgery to place a unique biological patch has a high likelihood of alleviating your night pain and pain with lifting your arm.;See this post for more information about the patch and how it works.;;
