This is a combination of symptoms which has plagued me recurrently, but only occasionally, for many years. I always thought most of these flare-ups were related to the constant martial arts injuries I sustained during my teaching career. However, now that my neck issues have gotten much worse, I get this particular pattern of suffering more often, with radiating soreness from the neck to the shoulder and acute blinding pain near the shoulder scapula.

It is important to diagnose the correct cause of the pain, if subsequent treatments are going to have any hope of success. Therefore, the goal of this article is to help patients to better understand the true nature of this common combination upper body pain syndrome.

Muscular Sprains And Tendon Or Ligament Strains

Strains and sprains most typically occur when we engage in tasks that our body is not accustomed to, or when we are involved in an accident. Lifting while twisting, or stretching past ones limits are common causes to strains and sprains of the back. These can be extremely painful, and are often accompanied by swelling and bruising of the surrounding area. Strains and sprains in the back tend to involve changes to the alignment of the spine and therefore typically respond well to chiropractic care.

Weight Loss Exercise And Diet

Think about the extra pounds people carry every day due to their being overweight. This puts added pressure and strain on the back and stomach muscles, causing those muscles to stretch and weaken. Weak back and stomach muscles cannot support the back properly. Poor posture can shift your body out of balance. This forces only a few muscles and joints to do all the work. Without proper exercise, muscles become weak and tire easily. Exercise is necessary to keep the back strong and limber.
