    If youve ever hobbled off the dance floor at a wedding with your heels in hand, you know shoes can easily cause foot pain. This holds true for all sorts of footwear, not just the special-occasion kind. Those pairs of office shoes, exercise shoes, and weekend-errand-running shoes that help you move around in the world? They can lead to pain if youre not careful.

    Your feet have the big job of supporting your body weight and sustaining the impact of standing, walking, running, and everything else you do throughout the day. Theyre complex body parts comprised of 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

In fact, a research article was published in late June 2017 concluding:The addition of foot targeted exercises and foot orthoses for 12 weeks was more effective than knee targeted exercises alone in individuals with patellofemoral pain.Heres the link to the study:

    If knee pain is disregarded, symptoms and treatment can last for several months and may lead to the need for possible surgery. Conservative treatment often involves:

    Training or activity modification.

    Your training or activity schedule will be discussed and modified so that a successful and effective treatment can be administered.

    R.I.C.E. Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

    As with any acute injury the RICE principle is paramount. It is necessary in the early stages of treatment to help fight the inflammation. Anti-inflammatory medication may also be suggested.

    Foot Orthotics.

    These allow the foot, leg and knee to function in a position which reduces the damaging forces placed on the knee and its surrounding structures. Forces are redistributed throughout the leg and stability is improved.

    Prescription Exercises.

    Appropriate strengthening and stretching of muscles around the knee may be advised by your Podiatrist.

    What Is Overpronation And Underpronation

    Pronation is basically the natural movement of your foot when you are running and walking. People can have neutral pronation, overpronation, or under pronation.

    We have already explained overpronation, which is what we commonly refer to as flat feet.

    Underpronation, meanwhile, is also called supination and it happens when there is not enough inward roll in the foot, meaning your weight is on the outside of your foot.

    How Do Knee Overuse Injuries Occur

    Various factors can cause overuse injuries to the legs, including poorly fitted footwear, inappropriate training programs and inadequate training surfaces .

    Another major cause of knee pain, which can often be overlooked, is abnormal alignment of the foot and lower leg.

    Excessively Pronated Feet commonly known as flat feet, this can lead to excessive internal rotation of the lower leg at the same time that the upper leg is rotating in the opposite direction with forces produced during walking or running. The knee is the area that therefore must absorb these twisting forces, and thus injuries due to excessive strain or force can be the end result. Excessively pronated feet can result in a knock-kneed position, which can contribute to various muscles exerting their forces in abnormal directions.

    Abnormally High-Ached Feet high arched-supinated feet, or feet which roll out excessively, do not allow normal knee flexion during walking. This foot type is often accompanied with a forefoot valgus which can also alter mechanics and forces on the ankle and the knee joint. Neutralising these abnormal foot and leg mechanics can help to reduce damaging forces on the knee joint.

    • Arthroscopy. A minimally-invasive diagnostic and treatment procedure used for conditions of a joint. Images of the inside of the joint are projected onto a screen used to evaluate any degenerative or arthritic changes in the joint to detect bone diseases and tumors to determine the cause of bone pain and inflammation.

    • Radionuclide bone scan. A nuclear imaging technique that uses a very small amount of radioactive material, which is injected into the patient’s bloodstream to be detected by a scanner. This test shows blood flow to the bone and cell activity within the bone.

    In the American Orthopaedic Associations Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, surgeons from the Seoul National University College of Medicine in South Korea published these 2018 findings:

    • Occasionally, patients experience new or increased ankle pain following total knee arthroplasty .
    • A considerable proportion of patients who underwent had concomitant ankle osteoarthritis with reduced flexibility of the hindfoot. These patients experienced increased ankle pain following and a worse clinical outcome.

    We do understand that we point out a lot of problems with surgery. We have seen so many patients post-surgery who did not have the success that they had hoped for. The research from the surgical community confirms what we have seen clinically there are a lot of people who did not have a successful surgery. This does not mean you will not have a good surgery if you choose to go that route. People do have successful surgeries too.

    • What is pointed out in this research is simple. If you have significant ankle osteoarthritis and you have a knee replacement, you are at risk for a worse clinical outcome.

    Gradual Increase In Pain

    Arthritis pain usually starts slowly, although it can appear suddenly in some cases.

    At first, you may notice pain in the morning or after youve been inactive for a while.

    Your knees may hurt when you:

    • climb stairs
    • stand up from a sitting position
    • walk on a flat surface
    • sit down for a while
